Operation Weserübung – The Occupation of Norway

In April 1940, the Gneisenau, together with its sister ship the Scharnhorst, was deployed in Operation Weserübung, the invasion of Norway. Its task was to lure the British battlecruisers away from the vulnerable landing sites. That plan succeeded, although the battlecruiser Renown did manage to score a hit that knocked out one of the main turrets. During the operations around Norway, the Gneisenau was torpedoed by a British submarine.
