On May 18, 1941, the Prinz Eugen, together with the battleship Bismarck, set sail from the port of Gdynia for the Atlantic Ocean. Six days later, on 24 May 1941, both ships engaged the British battlecruiser HMS Hood and the battleship HMS Prince of Wales during the Battle of Denmark in the Denmark Strait. The Hood sank and the Prince of Wales was badly damaged. After this battle, the Prinz Eugen went in search of Allied merchant ships on its own. Due to machine failure, the operation had to be aborted. On 1 June, the ship arrived in the port of Brest. A month later, the ship was hit by a bomb during an RAF air raid. Sixty crew members were killed in this attack.
